Eating NYC: Smorgasburg/Brooklyn Flea

On Saturday’s and Sunday’s, you can find Evan and me gorging on all the yummy food at Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Flea in Williamsburg. We love ourselves some good street food and supporting local business, and Smorgasburg/Brooklyn Flea offers the best of both worlds. In addition to tons of hot, freshly made fare, you can find awesome homemade packaged goods like raw chocolate, beefy jerky, marinades and sauces…all of which make great gifts! Above are some of our favorite items from past visits. Have you ever had a pupusa? It’s a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick corn tortilla that is stuffed with meats and cheeses…..and it’s to die for! Are you familiar with aguas frescas? My favorite is tamarindo but I heard the watermelon one was delicious as well so I might have to try it next time. I’ve had tacos before, but none like the “huarache” at Calixto Huaraches. It’s this massive handmade corn tortilla, piled high with meat, beans, cheese, lettuce, salsa, queso fresco, and sour cream. It was a monster!….but somehow, we managed to polish it off. Dough Bakery serves up some fresh-out-of-the-oven donuts that are wickedly good. They were all out of their famous blood orange donut which looks a lot like something Homer Simpson would devour so I opted for the classic sugar. Sea Bean Goods serves shots of soup and on this particular day, it was breezy and cold out so a shot of warm soup is exactly what we required. We tasted the pumpkin apple and the smoked bacon Brussels sprout…both left us salivating for more. Whole fried anchovies fall out of the realm of my understanding. As far as I’m concerned, there is no need to eat those. How my husband inhaled a half-dozen is beyond me, but he liked them…and for the record, I did eat one…but never again. Kettle chips, there’s something I can stomach. And when they’re pickle flavored, they’re even better. McClure’s Pickles makes tasty pickles and other pickle-y products like the most delicious bloody mary mix on the planet. This weekend is the last to check out the Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg in their outdoor spaces and starting at the end of the month, they’ll get the indoor versions going for the winter. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend it! xoxo

Reading this makes me a little pissed that we ended up not going to the Flea market as planned, but also relieved because I already didn’t have enough time to eat all the good NYC treats I wanted to anyway. Guess I’ll just have to plan another trip….

Hey i’m Salvadorian, the country of pupusas, is the best dish in my place. My mom have a pupusa’s restaurant. Good Choice, but next time, you should take them with her hands, is part of the custom.. By the way, great blog. Greetings from San Salvador, EL SALVADOR.
